She stepped out of the Benz on the runway and looked at the plane. The engines were roaring as she walked around to hug Jake.

“Be back soon, okay?” He smoothed down her black locks, and kissed the top of her head. He inhaled her scent.

“She’ll pull through. She’s strong. Send her my best.” He stepped back from her, as she turned to face the plane. She walked to the plane steps and looked up.

The door opened and the flight attendant stood on the outer edge of the door. Carly. Or Svetlana. Or whatever her name is.

Nia nodded at her.

Carly’s eyes looked red and swollen. Her usual thick eyeliner and mascara were absent. Her hair was pulled back into a ratty ponytail. She wore black pumps, along with a black pencil skirt and white blouse.

She pulled the cabin door shut.

Nia gazed out the window. I can’t lose her.

She fell to sleep, reflecting on Grandma Pat and some of the many moments they shared.

She awoke to Carly asking her if she wanted some juice.

“Yes,” Nia said, staring out of the window.

“What kind of juice would you like. We have apple, orange, pineapple, passionfruit…” She continued.

Nia projected her gaze to the wall in front of her.

“Jake has made sure that we have fully stocked the plane with nutritious items.”

Nia rolled her eyes. “Orange.” She swiveled her head back to the window.

Carly wandered off and brought back some juice a moment later.

“It’s freshly squeezed,” she said, raising her eyebrows, surveying her passenger.

Nia took a sip of the juice. “Thank you, Svetlana,” she said through a sardonic smile.

Carly’s eyes pleaded. “Please Nia.”

“Please what?” Nia looked up, scowling at her.

Carly’s shoulders slumped, as she wandered away.

She came back a moment later.

Nia sighed. She picked up her bag and began rummaging through the contents.

“What would you have done?” The woman was now staring directly at her, eyes stern.

Nia shook her head.

“I’m sorry for what I have done. I was just following orders. I regret ever having listened to that crazy, old hag,” she said, enunciating every syllable.

A slight smiled emerged to Nia’s lips. She quickly shut it down.

“I have never loved anyone as much as I have loved Dave. He is the kindest man in the world. He would not ever harm a fly. I do not know why they wanted me to send them the reports. It was stupid. And now I have lost the man that matters most to me in this world. I hate her for that.”

Nia’s face softened.

“I don’t know what I am going to do. I don’t know if he will ever forgive me for what I have done.” She sighed and raised her hand to her forehead.

Nia inspected the woman.

She was hardly the woman she was three days ago. She look worn, tired…damaged.

“If a love is true, it will return to you,” Nia said.

Carly snapped her head around to her. “What?”

“If a love is true, it will return to you. Let him go. If he comes back to you, he is yours to keep.
